Ankara is the capital of Turkey and an important stop for travelers interested in modern Turkish history, museums, and Central Anatolia routes.

The city is best known for Anitkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, as well as the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, Ankara Castle, and its strong rail and road connections. Ankara is not usually the first city travelers imagine for a Turkey trip, but it can be a useful and meaningful stop, especially for cultural routes and overland itineraries.

Most visitors spend one or two days in Ankara before continuing to Cappadocia, Konya, Eskisehir, or other parts of Central Anatolia.
