Eastern Turkey
A culturally rich region of ancient cities, mountain landscapes, Lake Van, Mardin, Gobeklitepe, Mount Nemrut, Ani, and deeper historical routes beyond classic western Turkey.

Quick facts
Good to Know
Eastern Turkey is one of the most culturally layered and visually dramatic parts of the country. It is very different from the classic Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus, and Pamukkale route, and it appeals to travelers who want deeper history, older cities, wide landscapes, and more regional character.
This broad region can include places such as Mardin, Sanliurfa, Gobeklitepe, Mount Nemrut, Diyarbakir, Lake Van, Kars, Ani, and Erzurum. Travel distances are longer than in western Turkey, so planning the route carefully is important.
Eastern Turkey is best explored with enough time. Instead of trying to see everything in a few days, it is usually better to focus on one route, such as Mardin and Sanliurfa, Van and Kars, or a longer cultural itinerary across several cities.
